What treatment can I expect to receive?
Our hand therapy treatments are tailored to address a wide range of conditions, from acute injuries to chronic ailments, ensuring personalised and effective relief for each patient.
If you have a sprain or repetitive strain injury, I provide strengthening exercises and short-term splints during your therapy appointment. For complex cases like fractures, treatments include compression therapy, scar massage advice, and grip-strength exercises.
Long-term conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis are managed with splints, compression gloves, strengthening exercises, and joint protection advice to ease pain and enhance hand function. This also helps reduce the risk of further deformities.
Patients with Fibromyalgia and hypermobility syndrome can benefit from similar treatments, including splints to support joints and reduce pain and instability.
How many treatments should I have?
The number of hand therapy treatments depends on your condition's severity. Each plan is personalised, and I will work closely with you to monitor progress and adjust the approach for the best outcomes.
For acute injuries such as sprains or repetitive strain injuries, a few sessions may suffice to achieve significant improvement. During these sessions, we will focus on providing exercises for strengthening, applying short-term splints, and offering guidance on managing your condition at home to ensure a swift recovery.
For more complex or chronic conditions like fractures, Rheumatoid arthritis, or Fibromyalgia, a longer-term treatment plan may be necessary. This could involve regular sessions over several weeks or months, where we will implement a combination of therapies including compression therapy, scar massage, splinting, and exercises aimed at improving grip strength and joint protection. The goal is to enhance hand function, reduce pain, and prevent further complications.
What is Hand Therapy?
A Hand Therapist is a specialist who treats hand and wrist conditions through years of dedicated practice.
The conditions that I treat are orthopaedic (such as fractured bones, repaired tendons) and Rheumatology conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Lupus and rarer conditions such as Scleroderma. I also treat patients with hypermobility, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome who may also be suffering from pain and weakness in their hands.
